This week’s TWD was chosen by Lisa of Surviving Oz: tribute to Katharine Hepburn brownies! Lisa isn’t actually a member of TWD, but she was the winner of a recent contest to design a new logo for us. Here’s what she came up with:
Isn’t it terrific? Thanks for the new logo Lisa and thanks for hosting this week! Lisa will be posting this week’s recipe on her site so head over there to check it out! You can also visit the TWD site to see all of the other brownies.
These brownies were really interesting to make. I don’t think I’ve ever made brownies where the batter was entirely mixed in a saucepan as it is with this recipe. Not that I’m complaining – less dishes to wash makes me a happy camper! The recipe called for walnuts or pecans, but I went with peanut butter chips instead since I had some I wanted to use up and I don’t really like nuts in my brownies. I also omitted the cinnamon and used instant espresso instead of instant coffee. I didn’t want the coffee flavor to be overwhelming so I only used 1 teaspoon rather than the 2 called for in the recipe.
I baked the brownies for exactly 30 minutes as Dorie suggests. I let them cool for quite a while before trying to remove them from the pan. Sadly, at that point, they did not want to come out of the pan – I cursed myself for not making a parchment sling for the pan. I sacrificed the first brownie so I could get the rest of them out relatively unscathed. I could tell as soon as I cut them that they’d be incredibly gooey and fudgey and they definitely were! I prefer my brownies less dense so these weren’t my favorite. The flavor was pretty good (the coffee flavor was just right with 1 teaspoon), but I couldn’t get past the texture. I’m sending them to work with Shane today so we’ll see what his coworkers think! For me, I think I’ll stick with some of my other favorite brownie recipes.

Your changes are totally sensible and I think make the brownies even tastier. I’m sure the CWs will love the brownies; I was at a dinner party where the brownies were seriously underdone and people were fighting to eat the goo!
Too bad – because you can send them to me if you like! PB in brownies? Oh yeah…
Sorry these weren’t your favorites! You can pack them up and send them to me…I’ll take care of disposing of them for you, if you know what I mean. ๐
You’d never know you had problems – they look FANTASTIC! Nice and thin – dense, chocolatey. I also cut my espresso (coffee) powder in half. Just the right amount – love that you added nuts. So many people I know hate them in brownies. Well done!
Sorry the werent your favorite. They certainly looked wonderful though. Gooey and rich.
I debated going with less espresso/coffee, too. Next time, I would cut back a bit, too. I hope Shane’s co-workers enjoy them! When you sacrificed the first brownie, did you give it a proper burial with some ice cream? :o)
Your brownies look great! I love dense brownies so these were a winner for me. I loved one-pan the method too, so easy!
i hate when i have trouble getting things out of the pan!! they still look delicious though!
One pot/bowl baking is my favorite! Mostly just because I’m lazy though. ๐ I love the new TWD logo! So cute!
I am sure they will be gobbled up in no time! They look good to me!
I’m sure the coworkers will love it! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the addition of the peanut butter!
I liked the fudginess, but I could see where they could be almost TOO dense! I love how you added peanut butter chips to these – what a great idea!
I love the addition of peanut butter chips. The pecans i used were pretty good, but I’m with you–I usually like my brownies without nuts.
Mmmm… I wish I’d put pb chips in mine! ๐ Sorry these didn’t do it for you!
They look gorgeous! I love gooey brownies, but I understand that they’re not for everyone.
I loved that mixing it up all in the same pan deal, too. I think that might have been my favorite part actually! Guys loved these…they looked very dense and rich so I knew they would be a hit here. Left out the cinnamon as they are just not into choc and cinn as they told me awhile ago.
Too bad you weren’t a fan. They look great!
Tracey, try it next time with cinnamon! I believe that was the magic touch!
I still LOVE the color and texture of your pictured brownies. SO GOOD-LOOKING.
Yum. Peanut butter chips. I bet those were great. Sorry they weren’t your favorite.
Wow, nice brownies…in spite of the issues.
!Lovely Brownies! Katherine Hepburn she would of love them looks so Delicious!

Have a wonderful Day!
I wasn’t a fan of the texture until I froze the little buggers. That worked!
Sorry these weren’t your favs! Intense chocolate is definitely my thing – I’d be glad to take them off your hands!
They look great and I’m a big fan of adding peanut butter to anything! I forgot about mine and baked them too long, so they weren’t as gooey as promised and they were good. I liked them, but I will probably stick with other brownie recipes too.
I made these four times in the last week, one being made with Reese’s. De-lish! Your photos look great. These are my new favorite brownie. They just came out perfect every time.
I’m betting the CW’s love them!
Brownies score extra points with me if they can be made in one pan. I am sure the recipients of these brownies will be very happy to eat them.
Ah, the sacrificial first brownie. We always fight over that little mess. Love your variation. I know it tasted great!
Those look really good! I prefer less dense brownies too…almost cakey, but not quite there either.
Your version looks delish! Sorry they weren’t your favorite though.
Sorry that you didn’t love these, but they sure look good.
Hey Tracey! Your brownies look fabulous! I know you said you prefer your brownies on the cakier side– but for me, the gooier the better! So these were fab!
Mine stuck – badly – all of them. But they were good. Yours look perfect.
Mmmmm. Peanut butter chips. Yum!
they look amazing- sorry the texture didn’t work for you
