Major breakthrough you guys.
If you’ve been reading this site for a while you know how much I love breakfast for dinner. I’d gladly eat it a few times a week if I could! However, Shane’s never been big on breakfast foods at night, so unless he’s out and I’m doing dinner alone, it just doesn’t happen very often.
Until now.
While I was housesitting last week I made sausage gravy with biscuits for the first time. Believe it or not, it was actually my first time having this dish period. That may seem completely crazy to those of you who live in the south, but in my little corner of New England, biscuits and gravy just isn’t a popular dish. Having now tried it for the first time, I can’t believe I missed out for 30+ years of my life. Best comfort food ever!
Anyway, when I came home I pitched the idea of sausage gravy and biscuits for dinner to Shane. I’m nothing if not persistent about this whole breakfast for dinner thing π I was shocked when he showed interest, and even more thrilled when we finished eating and he said he’d gladly have the meal again for dinner any time I wanted! Bonus: this is a super quick and easy weeknight meal. The cream biscuits come together in about 5 minutes, and while they bake, I brown the sausage and make the gravy. I also whipped up scrambled eggs to go with the meal and still this was all on the table in about 20 minutes total!
To be honest with you I’m not a huge fan of either sausage or gravy alone (I’m the weird person who skips the gravy on Thanksgiving – I know…) but somehow the combination of the flaky biscuits with the sausage and thick, creamy gravy seems like one of the best things I’ve ever eaten! It’s warm and hearty, and just plain comforting, which is especially nice right now as the nights are starting to get quite a bit cooler.
Breakfast for dinner is finally a reality at our house, and I couldn’t be happier this is the dish that won Shane over π
Sausage Gravy and Biscuits
from Food Network via Pink Parsley
12 oz pork sausage
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups milk (I use 1%)
Cream Biscuits
Set a medium skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Add the sausage and brown, using a wooden spoon to break it up as it cooks. When the sausage is browned and cooked through, use a slotted spoon to transfer it to a plate (be sure to leave as much of the rendered fat behind as possible).
Add the flour to the pan with the fat and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add the milk to the pan, whisking constantly. Once incorporated, bring the gravy to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until it has thickened to your desired consistency – it’ll only take a few minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the sausage back to the pan and stir to coat with the gravy.
Split the biscuits in half and place them on a plate. Spoon the gravy over the top and serve.
Biscuits and gravy is my favorite breakfast ever! My husband won’t eat it. π Yours looks so delicious!
Sausage gravy and biscuits is the BEST! It’s my boyfriend’s favorite breakfast meal; and it’s one of those things I try to pretend to not like…and then lick my plate clean. So salty and buttery <3
I never make this at home, it’s always something I get at a restaurant (unless I get benedict which is usually my first choice). But it looks so good! And I bet it’s slightly healthier than getting it out too.
Seriously, this is one of my favorite foods of all time! I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!! Do you deliver?
My brother-in-law always raves about sausage gravy and biscuits but I’ve never tried…they just seem unappetizing to me. Maybe I finally need to try them…love breakfast for dinner too!
I love this dish and yours looks yummy!!!! I add a few more things to give it more flavor…. cook the sausage in a lttle bacon grease and add some sage along with the salt and pepper when seasoning. I just made this last night for dinner along with the fresh eggs from our hens and homemade applesauce.
I love biscuits and gravy. I’ll have to try your biscuit recipe since it’s much faster than mine. I always buy hot sausage because it adds GREAT flavor. We will also like to sprinkle Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning on top. mmm.
I will never understand how that boy doesn’t like breakfast-for-dinner! I could live off it.
Take it from an ol’ country boy, you’re going the long way around.
1 lb. roll breakfast sausage
1/4 C. all purpose flour
2 C. milk
salt & pepper to taste
Brown and breakup sausage in sauce pot over medium heat, once browned add flour. Cook for 2-4 minutes while stirring occasionally to cook out the raw flavor of the flour. Add milk and stir occasionally until thick. Salt & pepper to taste.
Easy as watching someone else workout.
I have never had biscuits and gravy either. I LOVE biscuits and sausage, but am not a big fan or gravy – so I have been kind of hesitant to try it. Guess I need to give in and make some!
I love biscuits and gravy! I’m not a big gravy or sausage person either, but them together on a biscuit and I’m in love. I love that this can be made for a quick meal! My husband isn’t a big breakfast for dinner fan, either, but I’m thinking he might like this.
Sausage gravy and biscuits are the best thing ever!! I love this recipe π
Sausage Gravy and Biscuits is my all time favorite breakfast. For YEARS I wouldn’t eat anything but the kind my dad makes. And while I still think his is the best, I have ventured out to try it in restaurants and even make it on my own (albeit a healthier version with fat free milk and turkey sausage).
OMG how have you lived without sausage gravy and biscuits? Actually I just love sausage gravy on any type of bread of toast. I have never actually made it but I would absolutely eat this anytime of day. Yum!
Sausage gravy and biscuits is one of my favorites. We actually just had it for dinner tonight! I’m so glad you’ve been converted!
I have been a GREAT fan of Biscuits and Gravy, since my Army days at Ft Knox, KY.
I some times make it at home , but make coutons out of Whole Wheat Toast and us e this instead of the Biscuits.. I also add 2 -3 Poached Eggs,
