Well, I held out as long as I could guys, but now that we’re into the second week of September I couldn’t resist sneaking in a little bit of fall baking. The temperatures have cooled down just a tad, and with football on tv, this was the first weekend it really started to feel like fall to me. I always turn my attention to apples first, and this year is no different. Apples are so versatile, perfect in both sweet and savory applications; I think it only makes sense to show them some love in September before turning to all things pumpkin in October 🙂
I decided the first apple treat out of the gate had to be epic, and this apple-spice layer cake with goat cheese frosting checks all the boxes. I’m probably a little biased, but I think it’s a stunner! A moist and fluffy, triple layer apple cake flavored not only with homemade applesauce but also traditional fall spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The creamy goat cheese frosting is a little outside of the box, but if you’re a goat cheese fan, you’ll love this tangy, sweet concoction! And if not, feel free to go with cream cheese frosting instead.
I’m sharing the recipe for this amazing cake over at Baked by Rachel today as part of her Apple A Day party. For the second year in a row, she’s dedicated the entire month of September to celebrating apples on her blog. If you need fall baking inspiration, look no further – there’s a fantastic variety of sweet and savory recipes alike!

Love this cake so much, Tracey! You’ve outdone yourself! And we definitely should figure out some way to celebrate locally next year for the party 🙂
This DOES look epic! Love the goat cheese!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE. The goat cheese frosting, TOTALLY has me enticed! I never would have even thought of it! YUM!
Oh my gosh I am in love with this!! I’ve never had goat cheese frosting but now I must. And thank you for not posting pumpkin recipes, I am not ready yet! But apples I can definitely appreciate.
I’m an absolute goat cheese fanatic! This cake is a stunner – and I do have a birthday coming up… (I am so okay with the fact that it’s a fall dessert too.) 😀
This is stunning, Tracey! I am so ready for some fresh fall apples!
I have to admit, the goat cheese frosting has me a little leery (I’d probably stick with cream cheese) – but you totally had me with homemade caramel applesauce. Geez Louise, how have I never heard of that???? And in a cake??? Must be amazing.
I started baking with pumpkin this weekend so totally on the same page as you! I also have a ton of apples just dying to be made into something!
This cake is STUNNING and I’m dying over the sound of the frosting!
That goat cheese frosting is calling to me big time! Such a gorgeous cake. What a way to kick off fall baking!
Looks great Tracey! I’m not quite ready for fall yet, but will pin this for when I am!
This is so pretty, Tracey!
sounds good!
Loved this excellent cake Tracey! Great apple flavor and so moist! Loved the tangy goat cheese frosting too. Very decadant. Thanks again!
That cake is gorgeous! It looks absolutely perfect, and I love the flavors!
You had me at Goat Cheese Frosting! 🙂 Looks like a wonderful cake for fall!
Yep, I’m loving the sound of that goat cheese frosting, too. Sounds perfect with the apple cake, too.
Late in posting, but had to share my thoughts about how great this cake was!
I was worried about the frosting having too much of a goat cheese “bite”, but when I got this home and tried it (after a harrowing ride with it sliding around on my back seat), I couldn’t have been happier! The icing was the perfect complement to the spice cake. Just a great combo! Since I wasn’t able to get to the office with it that day we froze some of it (but that portion won’t make it to the office either!) Thanks again!
