This week’s SMS was chosen by Cristine of Cristine Cooks: apple orchard pecan crumble! I am a huge fan of apples in desserts, including apples crumbles and crisps, and I have a ton of apples from a recent trip to the orchard so I loved this pick. Another fantastic thing about this recipe is how easy it is to make individual servings, which really helps since it’s just me and Shane at our house and he doesn’t eat apples. I halved the recipe (well, the apple portion – I made the full crumble recipe) and wound up with one small ramekin, 2 medium ramekins and a small au gratin dish. The 2 medium ramekins immediately went into my freezer and I can’t wait to bake them up for dessert later in the week!
I modified the recipe just a bit this week. I don’t like pecans so instead I used a combination of cinnamon chips and some old-fashioned oats in the crumble topping. I also added raisins to the filling. Sarah had mentioned that she didn’t use any sweeter in the filling and thought it was terrific, and while I wasn’t brave enough to leave it out entirely, I did halve the sugar. I baked the small ramekin and au gratin dish this morning and had the small ramekin as a late breakfast. It was awesome! I loved the recipe. The only thing that I think could make it even better would be a scoop of vanilla ice cream π
Thanks to Cristine for a terrific choice this week! It was the perfect recipe for this time of year. You can find the recipe on her site or pick up the book. Head over to the SMS site to see the rest of this week’s desserts!

oh. I love the subs. The cinnamon chips and oats sound wonderful as a topping.
Delicious! I love apple crumble and this one looks delicious π
I love the idea of adding cinnamon chips to a crumble! They are so addicting!
I love the idea of adding the cinnamon chips! It looks delicious!
Thinking I should go out to orchard immediately and score apples for this. This and that cake that Sarah and Cathy made earlier in the week. This looks really good. Lucky you to find cinnamon chips…I have had no luck with finding those, but it gives me great pleasure to keep trying.
oh yum you gave me the best idea for my left over crumble..cinnomon chips are going over the top, then I’ll nuke it in the microwave and add some ice cream…thanks for the great idea! Your crumble looks so good and Im glad you loved it. Next time I will leave out the sugar!
I thought about adding raisins to mine, but the hubby doesn’t care for them (though I love them) so I decided to leave them out. Love the cinnamon chips!
I love that you added cinnamon chips! Great fall treat!
The crumble looks really good. I like the idea you 1/2’d the sugar. She is such a good influence.
I look forward to trying this one.
looks great – I thought about subbing in oats too b/c I don’t like pecans but I just left out the pecans and didn’t add in anything extra…they’re in the oven right now as we speak – did you decrease the baking time for your smaller ramekins?
The modifications you made to the crumble sound great!
Looks good! I like the addition of cinnamon chips. I doubled the crumble on mine, too. That was a good tip from Karen!
You are awesome! Fixing them into different sizes and being able to freeze one is brilliant AND you used cinnamon chips. I want to bake this again and give your cinnamon chips a try along with freezing for later. Loved your crumble picture too, YUM!
Mmm. That looks fabulous, Tracey! I’m totally in the mood for some apple desserts now. I didn’t realize at first that those were cinnamon chips. They look like butterscotch chips, which I bet would also be good.
I love the addition of the oats — what a great idea! Love your crumble.
This crumble looks incredible. Oh and those cinnamon chips…hmmm…..hmmmm…..good.
Your crumble looks great, I love the cinnamon chips! I thought about adding oats, since that’s what I usually do, but chickened out at the last minute π And it was amazing with vanilla ice cream! Great work!
Your changes sound delicious! And the apple-shaped ramekins are from TJ Maxx and I just bought them a few weeks ago. They came in red and light green in packs of 2.
Mmm! Cinnamon chips sound wonderful! And I love the idea of adding the raisins to it.
I’m excited to see your apple desserts! Pretty crumbles – they look delicious. For years I routinely subbed oats for nuts in crumble toppings. Now I love the nuts too, os it’s a toss up.
Your crumbles look fantastic! Cinnamon chips sound like the perfect addition; I didn’t think the recipe had enough cinnamon, so I added extra to both the filling and the topping.
omgosh! your crumble looks fan-freaking-tastic!!! i have to try this crumble again. my crumble was one giant chewy mass rather than the crumbly light texture you appear to have.
Well, that’s because vanilla ice cream seems to improve everything just a little! Seriously, this looks delicious. Nice touch with the cinnamon chips.
cinnamon chips and oats? Oh my, that was a great idea! So smart of you to freeze little ones for use later!
The cinnamon chips sound DELICIOUS in that dessert! I think I want to try that idea the next time I make an apple crumble! Gorgeous fall dessert! Just beautiful!
Your crumble looks delicious! All of your changes sound wonderful – I thought about oats in the crumble, I think I’ll have to add them next time. I loved loved loved this, and I’m glad you did too! What does Shane have against apples?! Well, more for you π
Your crumble looks perfect! I like the additions and subs.
