This week’s TWD was selected by Lynne of Cafe LynnyLu: vanilla ice cream! I haven’t made homemade ice cream in a few weeks so this recipe came at the perfect time. There’s nothing better than grabbing a bowl of homemade ice cream to enjoy on a hot summer night!
Shane’s been asking me to make him ice cream with M&M’s mixed in for a week or so now so I knew I’d add M&M’s to Dorie’s ice cream. (On that note, has anyone seen the mini baking M&M’s they used to carry in the store? I couldn’t find them anywhere.) I also decided to experiment by substituting brown sugar for the granulated sugar. A few weeks ago I’d made brown sugar vanilla ice cream for the Sweet Melissa Sundays group and we absolutely loved it so I was curious to see what would happen if I tried brown sugar in Dorie’s recipe.
We dug in to the ice cream last night and we both enjoyed it, though I think Shane was a bigger fan than me. Something about the texture was a bit off and I’m sure it probably had something to do with my brown sugar substitution. The flavor was great though! This is a very rich ice cream to begin with – 2 cups of cream, 2 cups of whole milk and 6 egg yolks – and the brown sugar only made it richer and more decadent. Oh, and those frozen M&M’s? Fantastic! They also added some fun color streaks to the ice cream. I’ll definitely be trying the recipe again with granulated sugar soon because I’ve heard it’s really terrific.
Thanks to Lynne for her selection this week! You can find the recipe for the ice cream on her blog. There were likely quite a few variations on this week’s recipe so head over to TWD to check them out!

Awesome photo! I’d make it again with candy just to have those colours in my bowl.
I’m also curious to taste the brown sugar difference.
That looks awesome! What did you do for the M&Ms, if you couldn’t find the mini baking ones? I would imagine full-sized M&Ms being capable of breaking your teeth when frozen!

I love the color! The M&M’s are a great addition.
I liked this vanilla but I think that the SMS brown sugar would win in a taste-off for me. I just love that Shane wanted M&M’s in his ice cream — that’s adorable. And, it made the ice cream such a fun rainbow of colors. Great job, as usual!
Cool! The color from the M&Ms makes it look tie-dyed.
Love the color! Great ice cream… i have to try this one too.
The M&Ms really make it look like a party in a bowl! I love cold, crunch M&Ms, that was a really good idea.
Look at those colors! It reminds me of bubble gum ice cream! Awesome!
Did you break up the big M&M’s?
I love the color streaks. It is really pretty. I have never done a brown sugar ice cream.
AAHH! I love the color – so festive!
I really liked the brown sugar vanilla from SMS, more so than this version (shh, don’t tell). The brown sugar was a great idea – I briefly toyed with the possibility as well.
Shane knows how to up the dessert ante, doesn’t he? :o) I haven’t seen those M&M baking bits in a long time. You could always try the mini m&m’s next time. Nice job, Tracey!
I saw the colors in your ice cream and all I could think was Funfetti! Love the colors, although it’s too bad the brown sugar didn’t quite work out.
My favorite thing in the world used to be M&M McFlurries from McDonalds. Then I realized how many calories I must have consumed when I ate them, so I haven’t had one in years. This has totally sparked that desire in my again! Love the brown sugar addition, love the colors!
I love the colorful psychadelic effect from the m&ms!
I’ve read so many rave reviews of that brown sugar ice cream. That’s it….it is next on my ‘to do’ list.
This ice cream is so pretty!
love the color streaks, so fun!
My daughter would love the M&Ms! I thought I bought the mini baking ones… is there a difference between them an the minis? If not, try Target.
This is nice…vanilla ice cream and all the colors are so summery…great pictures!
Your ice cream looks adorable (really! all those bits of color) and now I’ve got to go try Sweet Melissa’s ice cream. Brown sugar makes everything better!
Jennifer – I did use full-sized M&M’s since I couldn’t find the minis. They weren’t actually so hard that I feared breaking a tooth – just harder than your typical straight from the bag M&M’s. Give it a shot! 🙂
Sugar B – I didn’t break up the M&M’s. I think I wound up with color streaks b/c I threw the M&M’s into the ice cream maker for the last minute of churning and a bunch of them got stuck under the mixing arm!
I love the m&m and brown sugar additions – yummy! 🙂
How fun! I LOVE the rainbow look from the colored M&Ms. Grocery stores here still have the minis??? The candy stand in the lanes when you check out also have those little tubes with minis in them. Have you seen those?
Yum, just pure yum!
That looks really cool! I bet my girls would love it–they’re big fans of m&ms. I’m lucky–I can actually buy mini m&ms in the bulk section of one of the places I shop.
Shane sure seems to have some great dessert ideas!! The ice cream looks great!!
That is some psychedelic vanilla ice cream! Your variation sounds incredible. Hmmm, I bought a bag of mini M&Ms in the last few months…Stop and Shop or Shaws, certainly. I hope they haven’t been discontinued!
I believe mini baking M&Ms have been discontinued. I have been looking for them for a couple of months. Stop & Shop told me it was discontinued, they could not tell me for sure if the mfg discontinued, but I have check Wal-mart and other markets and no one has them.
