This week’s TWD was selected by Tommi of Brown Interior: honey peach ice cream! I almost sat this week out because, as much as I love most fruits, I’m not a big fan of fruit flavored ice cream. That said, peach ice cream is not among the fruit flavored ice creams I’ve tried, so I decided not to knock it before I’d tried it.
I don’t want to harp on my lack of enthusiasm for peeling peaches since I’ve already discussed it twice on this blog so I won’t π Instead, I’ll just thank my new friend Diana, who made her ice cream before me and shared via Twitter that I didn’t actually have to peel the peaches. She simply strained the peach puree when she added it to the custard so that’s what I did too!
I made a third of the recipe this week, which moved the process along a bit faster than usual since the quantity of ingredients was so small. I think the custard probably only took about 5-7 minutes from start to finish. I threw a bit of rum (about a teaspoon or so) in the custard along with the vanilla extract because I find that my homemade ice creams tend to get a bit too frozen. I chilled the custard in an ice bath and it cooled quickly, again because there was so little of it. On the advice of many of the other TWD bakers, I skipped adding bits of peach to the ice cream as it finished churning.
As for the verdict….as I suspected, this wasn’t my favorite ice cream. I will say, though, that it makes for a fun change! I tend to always choose mint chocolate chip when we go out for ice cream and this is certainly a nice departure from all that chocolate. Dorie suggested pairing this ice cream with her sugar cookies and I wish I’d had a chance to make those cookies this week as I am sure it would have been a fantastic combination!!
Thanks to Tommi for encouraging me to get my ice cream maker out for the first time this year! I know this is the first of many treats I’ll make it in this summer. You can find the honey peach ice cream recipe on Tommi’s blog and you can see all of this week’s ice cream by visiting the TWD site.
Aaahhh! Your peach ice cream looks delicious! I am sorry it is not your favorite but you are lookiing at your ice cream maker for other options this summer =D The sugar cookies sound like a great addition. I am still going to try and get mine done, but I am planning on adding some Peach Schnapps at the end. We’ll see =)
TRACEY! I made this using apriums instead and it turned out all right.
I’d rather do vanilla ice cream!
Well it sure does look fabulous! I’m not a fan of peaches either, so I subbed plums and while mine looks beautiful, it came out horribly bitter. Oh well π
Sorry it wasn’t a big hit, it looks fantastic!
your photos are beautiful. sorry you didn’t love it. after reading dorie’s note about the sugar cookies, i found myself craving them as well with this ice cream.
I knew peaches weren’t going to go over well here, so I left them out!
But I’m with you – I’ll take chocolate any day of the week!
The perfect ice cream for summer!
My goodness, straining is such a good idea. Very nicely done.
Your ice cream looks great. I love the color. Too bad it wasn’t your favorite, but at least you tried.
I agree that this offered a nice change of pace. I always go for chocolate or caramel ice creams, so it was fun to try a fruity flavor. Yours looks great!
I think the sugar cookies would have been a great combo too. Love the color of your ice cream!
It sure looks great! I’m with you – I’m not a big fruit ice cream person. But I’m glad I tried it too!
So many people added alcohol for the texture. I’ll have to try that. Mine was a bit icy. Glad you tried out the recipe.
I will say that there is nothing better than Mint Chocolate Chip! Sorry you weren’t crazy about this one, but it does look great!
What a beautiful almost victorian pink you got on that ice cream! You must have pretty darn nice peaches!
Of course, I went all out to try to find white peaches but no couls do, I got sutck with plain old yellow… pfff.
Very pretty, Tracey!
I don’t typically love fruit ice creams either (but love a good fruit sorbet), but peach is an exception for me. Love it. Yours is beautiful, and it pays to be the last one on Twitter to make a recipe, right?
I think we would get along really well in regular life, as Mint Chocolate Chip is my first choice, too!! Even if you didn’t like it, you tried it! Nice job.
I’m glad you gave it a try anyway, and you did the right thing to omit the peaches at the end. It looks perfect!
Your ice cream looks perfect. I liked it but I love fruity ice creams. Although I must say I’m partial to mint chip too.
Rum and peaches has to be a happy combination. Yours looks fantastic, and how did you get that color? Maybe from leaving the skins on…great color, mine is really pale.
What gorgeous photos! I love the peach slice and sprig of mint. Sorry it wasn’t to your liking.
Glad I could help! =) I’m all for finding ways to make life easier. And I love how great Twitter is for sharing ideas. I’m sorry this wasn’t your favorite. Mint chocolate chip is one of mine, too.
Your photos look great, sorry this wasn’t your favorite. I liked it a lot, but I would probably never order it at an ice cream shoppe.
glad you tried it. i love how the peach puree imparted a peachy color to it π
Peach ice cream…so delicate…love it! Great pictures!
Looks fabulous and thanks for the tip on straining the peaches – I didn’t realize Twitter was so useful! This wasn’t my favorite ice cream either, but it’s always fun making ice cream.
Your peach ice cream looks very yummy to me.
Great photos! What a great idea to strain the peach sauce too.
Do you have a good recipe for mint chip ice cream? I just got my machine and am so looking forward to summer! π
@nancy – Yes, sometimes my procrastinating ways pay dividends π
@The Food Librarian – Mary, I don’t have a good recipe for mint chocolate chip yet! There are recipes for chocolate mint ice cream as well as fresh mint ice cream in The Perfect Scoop but I haven’t tried them.
I’m glad you found a shortcut and am glad you tried it. Your ice cream looks wonderful to me!
I’m glad that you made the ice cream; I think it looks great!
I love your photos! I didnt add the peach chunks either…I didnt want to bite into icy fruit.
Your ice cream looks fabulous! Sorry you didn’t love it. Wasn’t my favorite either.
Oh YUM! Your ice cream looks amazing – so sorry it wasn’t your favorite, though! I can’t wait to try it with other fruits. I really loved this!

Your Honey Peach Ice Creams looks terrific! It looks nice and creamy. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream in the summer! =)
It looks so pretty – what a lovely color! I’m a huge mint chocolate chip fan too.
I bet leaving the skins on is what gives your ice cream its nice orange hue. Sorry this wasn’t a big hit for you, though.
Great tip about the peach skins – I will definitely try that next time! That was the fussiest part of making it for me.
I’m thinking I might make some of Mom’s molasses cookies and use this for an ice cream sandwich. Could be good!
sorry you didn’t care for it. It looks delicious.
Looks delicious! I loved the combination of the honey and the peaches.
Your ice cream looks great! I love chocolate the most but sometimes it’s nice to have something different.
